The 44th Rio Tinto Martin Hanson Memorial Art Awards 2019 exhibition of entries, supported by all-local individuals, businesses and industry.

This year's Awards were judged by Simon Elliott, Deputy Director, Curatorial and Exhibitions, Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art. The winners were announced at the exhibition's official opening, 6pm, Saturday, 19 October 2019. The Winners List is available as an attachment, below.

Visitors are encouraged to take part in The 2019 QAL People's Choice Awards* by voting at the kiosks available within the Gallery & Museum until 5pm, Thursday, 28 November 2019. 

Voting in The QAL People's Choice Awards is open in the following 4 categories:

  • Section 1: Easel Paintings
  • Section 2: Works on Paper
  • Section 3: Three Dimensional and Fibre Works
  • Section 4: Digital Works

MEET THIS YEAR'S JUDGE:

Simon Elliott is a highly skilled leader who has over 28 years’ experience working in art museums in Australia. Simon’s employment spans professional roles in local, State and Commonwealth museums, with 17 years at national institutions based in Canberra. His broad work experience is supported by Bachelor of Arts (Hons) degree and Master of Business Administration (MBA).

Simon commenced as Deputy Director, Curatorial and Exhibitions at the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art in March 2017. From 2007 to 2017, he held the role of Assistant Director, Curatorial and Educational Services at the National Gallery of Australia (NGA). Prior to employment at the NGA, Simon was Assistant Director of the National Portrait Gallery (NPG) in Canberra, for seven years.

Born in Brisbane, Simon commenced his museum career at the Queensland Art Gallery for 13 years, where he was involved in the early Asia Pacific Triennials of Contemporary Art (APT), including co-curating for Malaysia in APT2 in 1996. Currently, Simon is the Deputy Chair of the national museum industry peak body Australian Museums and Galleries Association.

By completing the QAL People’s Choice Awards electronic voting form, you are giving consent for your details held by Rio Tinto, to be used for the competition draw only, relating to the ‘voter’s prize’. The prize includes two nights for two people in a luxury beachside suite at Heron or Wilson Island. Including all transfers, meals and your choice of; A snorkelling trip, Sunset Wine & Cheese Cruise or a semi-submersible tour. Limit of one entry per person. Prizes are strictly subject to availability and blackout dates may apply, package valid until December 2020. The competition is open to all people who view The 44th Rio Tinto Martin Hanson Memorial Art Awards 2019 Exhibition at the Gladstone Regional Art Gallery & Museum within the competition dates. Entries must be lodged via the iPad kiosks in the Gallery to qualify. Competition opens 6pm, Saturday, 19 October 2019 and closes 5pm, Thursday, 28 November 2019. The winner of the competition will be drawn by a random computerized draw at the offices of Vivo Group, Level 2, 35 Amelia Street, Fortitude Valley, Qld 4006. Winners will be notified by phone and email and will be invited to attend a People's Choice Awards morning tea on Wednesday the 4th December 2019.
