Region's major art awards release entry forms

The entry forms for the region's most prestigious and much loved art awards; the Rio Tinto Alcan Martin Hanson Memorial, have been released for 2013.

Hundreds of entries from around Australia will soon be heading to the Gladstone Regional Art Gallery & Museum, all vying for a stake in the $20,500 prize pool including the coveted overall prize of $10,000.

Jeremy Hastings, Manager Community Relations Gladstone, said the event, now in its 38th year, was the biggest cultural project on Rio Tinto Alcan calendar:

"Every year we look forward to the awards, it is a true display of the local talent we have in the region," said Mr Hastings.

"It's an incredibly exciting time for the artists, and we are thrilled to be a part of such a wonderful cultural initiative, which provides invaluable opportunities to Gladstone and the Queensland arts community" he continued.

Taking up the difficult challenge of judging the 2013 Awards, is writer, curator and broadcaster Julie Ewington. Ms Ewington is Curatorial Manager, Australian Art, at the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art, leading a department embracing indigenous and non-indigenous art from European colonisation to the present.

On Saturday 9 November, Ms Ewington will present her Floor Talk of the exhibition at 11.30am, with her Illustrated Lecture following at 2pm. At 6pm that evening will be the Official Opening and presentation of awards.

All entries for the 2013 Rio Tinto Alcan Martin Hanson Memorial Art Awards should be submitted to the Gladstone Regional Art Gallery & Museum between 10am and 5pm Wednesday 30 October to Saturday 2 November 2013. Entry fee is $11 per art work including GST.
