Official exhibition launch
All are welcome to join Cr Matt Burnett, Mayor Gladstone Region, and guest speakers, at the Gladstone Regional Art Gallery & Museum, 6pm this Friday, 9 March 2018, to celebrate the official launch of the following exhibitions:
The inaugural Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race was held in 1949. 2018 marks the 70th edition of the ocean classic. This heritage exhibition showcases a selection of historical images and memorabilia throughout the years, from the Gladstone Regional Art Gallery & Museum collection, as well as items on loan from the community.
Photographers of the Gladstone Region were invited to capture the spirit of Central Queensland's lifestyle, people and environment for this annual photographic exchange between residents living in the Gladstone Region and Saiki City, Japan. An exhibition of all Gladstone Region entries is currently on display at the Gladstone Regional Art Gallery & Museum. Thirty images, selected for display in Saiki, will be announced at the official launch. A Gladstone Saiki Sister City Advisory Committee initiative, supported by Gladstone Regional Council.
A new panel display on tour from the Australian National Maritime Museum invites visitors to walk in the footsteps of famous Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton and brings together first-hand accounts and dramatic images by official expedition photographer Australian Frank Hurley to tell the compelling story of Shackleton’s Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition of 1914-17 and his bid to stay alive. Shackleton: Escape from Antarctica is a touring exhibition developed by the Australian National Maritime Museum.
Over one hundred years ago – on 14 September 1914 - Australia’s first submarine AE1 disappeared while patrolling the seas near present day New Guinea. This story is now being told in War at Sea – the Navy in WWI an eight-panel exhibition on tour from the Australian National Maritime Museum.
A presentation of the 12th annual Celebrate Australia Primary School Art Competition entries. This competition encourages Gladstone Region students to think about an aspect of Australia they believe is really important to them and put their creativity to work using pen, paint, collage or other media on A4 paper. Six winning works were reproduced as free commemorative postcards, available at the exhibition venues, while stocks last.
When Mareika Holmes (Chauntler) a Gladstone local and mother of two was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015 she felt compelled to share her story to support others facing a similar challenge. The result is this exhibition and documentary 'Goddess Mareika'. The exhibition explores her emotional, physical and spiritual journey from cancer diagnosis to mastectomy and beyond.

Heritage photographs and objects featured within Local Medical History are from the Gladstone Regional Art Gallery & Museum collection and on loan from the community.
