"Take a Seat" at the Gallery & Museum next Friday

The first official exhibition launch for 2017 will be held the Gladstone Regional Art Gallery & Museum from 11am, next Friday January 20.

'Take a Seat' celebrates the work of Down Syndrome artist, Peter Rowe, and features colourful paintings focused around the concept of 'chairs' as a metaphor. For Peter, ‘chairs’ have opened up a challenging but exciting form of self-expression and a diverse new way of representing his life.

“A chair’s function is not just to provide a place to sit; it is to provide a medium for self-expression. Chairs are about status … or signalling something about oneself.”

[Evan Davis, English economist, journalist, and presenter for the BBC]

Not only does Peter have Down Syndrome, but he is also very limited verbally. In order to speak, Peter must rely upon a system called Facilitated Communication (FC) however, this is where his limitations end. For the past 26 years Peter has been creating art that is a revelation and celebration of his life and work, capturing the simple pleasures of family and home and revealing his natural flair with bright colours.

All are welcome to join Peter and friends at the launch next Friday, with light refreshments served after the formalities.   Please RSVP to attend, phone 4976 6766 or email gragm@gladstone.qld.gov.au

'Take a Seat - The Art of Peter Rowe' is currently on display and will remain open until Saturday February 25.
