You Be The Judge
The annual Rio Tinto Alcan Martin Hanson Memorial Art Awards, hosted by the Gladstone Regional Art Gallery & Museum, is currently calling for submissions. An enticing $34,500 is on offer this year, making this annual regional even the most highly anticipated one yet. The annual Art Awards are possible thanks to the support of the local community, business and industry, as well as the continued interest from the public.
Judging the 2014 Art Awards this year is Associate Professor Marian Drew from Queensland College of Art, Griffith University. Associate Professor Drew is a well-known established artist, with works appearing in gallery collections across the globe. She has been making for three decades with a background in digital art.
As well as having to judge the Awards, Associate Professor Drew will conduct a free floor talk at 11.30am, Saturday 8 November, with the public discussing the works on display, followed a gold coin donation Artists' Lunch. That afternoon at 2pm, Drew will deliver her free Illustrated Lecture on 'Art & the Environment'.
All Award winners will be announced that evening at 6pm, Saturday 8 November after the exhibition has been officially launched by Jeremy Hastings, Manager Community Relations Gladstone, Rio Tinto Alcan Yarwun and Queensland Alumina Limited.
After the launch the 'QAL People's Choice' voting kiosks will open, encouraging visitors to the exhibition to vote for their favourite works from each of the available 4 sections. Gallery guests will have the power to judge who they think has created the best works while going in the draw to win a two night getaway to beautiful Heron Island for themselves.
At the conclusion of the exhibition the 'QAL People's Choice' winners will be announced at 6.30pm, Thursday 11 December, at a private function, and the four most popular artists will each receive $500.
