Submissions sought for prestigious Gladstone Region art awards

Submissions have been called for the 2018 Rio Tinto Martin Hanson Memorial Art Awards at the Gladstone Regional Art Gallery & Museum on October 13.

Now in their 43rd year, the nationally recognised awards draw hundreds of submissions from artists throughout Australia with this year’s awards offering an overall first prize of $15,000 courtesy of major sponsors Rio Tinto.

Artists will compete for an additional $25,000 in prizes thanks to the generous support of other sponsors including Queensland Alumina Limited, Anderson’s Auto City, Gladstone Area Water Board, Australia Pacific LNG, Gladstone Ports Corporation and Gladstone Cinemas.
Gallery & Museum Manager/Curator Jo Duke said this year’s awards would again feature four sections – Easel Paintings, Works on Paper, Three Dimensional and Fibre Works, and Digital Works.

"The awards are fabulous as they allow the Gladstone Region to see what contemporary Australia is making, both from a national, state and local perspective," she said.

"Now that the 2018 entry form and awards brochure are out, we hope that everyone is getting their artworks ready to submit.
“There is less than one month to go before artists have to deliver their entries to the Gallery & Museum."

Rio Tinto Yarwun General Manager Mark Gilmore said "The Rio Tinto Martin Hanson Memorial Art Awards celebrate and recognise the local culture, talent, diversity and art within our region.

“With an attractive prize pool, we look forward to seeing artists from near and far enter. Rio Tinto is proud to once again return as the major sponsor alongside Queensland Alumina Limited.”

This year’s awards judge Kevin Wilson will announce the winners at 6pm on Saturday, October 13, after Rio Tinto has officially opened the exhibition of entries.

Submissions for the 43rd Rio Tinto Martin Hanson Memorial Art Awards are to be delivered to the Gallery & Museum, on the corner of Goondoon and Bramston streets, Gladstone, between 10am - 5pm, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, October 4-6.
Entry is $15 per submission with a maximum of two submissions per artists. For more information contact the Gallery & Museum on 4976 6766 or via email gragm@gladstone.qld.gov.au
