'Essential Queensland’ Art Exhibition for Gladstone Region

The touring exhibition of the prestigious 2012 Queensland Regional Art Awards, ‘The Essential Character of Queensland’, will be at the Gladstone Regional Art Gallery & Museum until Saturday 4 May 2013.

Curated by John Waldron (Curator and former Cultural Heritage & Collections Manager, Sunshine Coast Regional Council) this impressive exhibition features the diverse art work of 30 of the finest emerging and established artists working in regional and remote Queensland.

The theme for 2012, ‘The Essential Character of Queensland’, invited artists to respond to and explore how the theme related to the lives, the people and the places of regional and remote Queensland communities.

Gallery Director of the Gladstone Regional Art Gallery & Museum, Pamela Whitlock, said she was thrilled that the exhibition was able to come to this region.

“This touring exhibition shows regional and remote artists in their best light” she said “and provides a wonderful opportunity for them to show their work to a wider audience”.

The Queensland Regional Arts Awards is a hallmark event produced by Flying Arts which for more than 40 years has been providing visual arts development services throughout Queensland.

Executive Officer of Flying Arts, Stephen Clark, said he was very pleased that the touring exhibition was taking place in the Gladstone region.

“The Awards encourage participation and recognise excellence” he said, “and the annual Queensland tour is a great opportunity for artists outside the mainstream to reach out to a wider audience”.

A free floor talk of the exhibition will take place at the Gallery/Museum 5pm Thursday 2 May.  Guest speaker Sarah Barron from Flying Arts Alliance Inc. will lead a discussion on 'Keys to achieving a winning artwork'.  All welcome to come along with light refreshments served afterwards.  RSVP to the Gallery/Museum by 5pm Tuesday 30 April if you wish to attend the event.
